SIX adults learners sat Leaving Cert English this year at the Portlaoise Adult Education Centre, with pass marks achieved by all in what was described as a massive achievement.

Adult literacy organiser, Ms Kathleen Dunne explained that all the learners left school at an early age and some of them had never sat an exam in their life.

“They all did very well, they all passed,” she said. “Some of them had done their Junior Cert English with us and they decided to go on and do the Leaving Cert.”

The learners, five of whom hail from Portlaoise with one from Camross, attended one class a week for two and a half hours over the academic year, juggling family commitments, work and study.

The tutor was Ms Eileen Grace and revision classes were provided. Ms Dunne said that some of the learners are now considering going on to do other courses and the staff are all very proud of them.
