Labour Senator John Whelan has revealed that there will be no reduction in the old age pension.
“The Programme for Government gives a clear commitment there will be no reduction in the old age pension,” he said.
“My office has received many queries from elderly people seeking clarity on this issue and I am pleased to be able to impart to them this Government’s position on it - that their pension will not be touched.”
Senator Whelan said he was looking forward to working with Ministers Howlin and Noonan over the coming weeks to identify ways in which Budget 2014 can be fair and balanced, while also protecting the most vulnerable in society.
“I will be working with my colleagues to explore the need for more innovative ways of looking at the taxation system, ensuring that tax exiles pay their fair share here in Ireland because sponsorship and philanthropy are not an alternative to taxation,” he said.
The senator concluded by saying he was going to ensure tax justice and fairness by enhancing efforts to clamp down on tax avoidance by multi-nationals who don’t pay the 12 per cent corporation tax.
