A Portarlington man who thought he was covered under the garage insurance when using one of their courtesy cars was fined at Portlaoise District Court, last week.

Ioneluz Muntearu, 4 Spa Street, Portarlington was stopped by Sgt Carey on October 4 at Market Square, Portarlington.

Defending, Philip Meagher explained that Muntearu was only temporarily driving the vehicle, which belonged to a garage when he was stopped by Sgt Carey.

“He was insured on his father’s policy by 123.ie, he left that vehicle into a local garage in Mountrath for repair and they loaned him a car for an hour to an hour and a half, as he had to go back to Portarlington.”

Mr Meagher said Muntearu believed he was covered under the garage insurance, while the garage believed he was covered under his father’s insurance.

Mr Meagher said the defendant was working in a car wash in Mountrath and living in Portarlington.

He said Muntearu’s father loaned him his car to get to work on the busy days.

Judge Catherine Staines fined the defendant €300, but did not disqualify him.
