There was confusion in Laois County Council last week as to who was responsible for fixing doors and windows on a council house after a recent robbery in Mountrath.
Cllr John Joe Fennelly asked that Laois County Council have an insurance policy in place to cover malicious damage to its property, and where this is verified by Gardaí that the tenants should not have to pay for damage.
“There have been robberies in our area. Laois County Council owns the structure of the house, and it is unfair to ask the tenants to pay that money. It is not fair to levy that onto the tenant, as the tenant can only insure the contents. For a genuine case, with a full Garda report, this should be looked at.”
He was told in a reply from Michael Rainey that it is not the council’s policy to fix doors and windows, but that the council’s current insurance arrangements will be reviewed.
