A Galway man on public order charges was told by Judge Catherine Staines he needs to stop drinking.
Derek Rigney, 111 Castlepark, Ballybane, Galway, was charged with being intoxicated, using threatening behaviour, obstructing a peace officer, and refusing to give his name and address, at Tower Hill, Portlaoise, on February 7 this year.
Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that two men, one of whom was Rigney, were involved in an altercation, punching each other. The gardaí told them to desist and Rigney became aggressive to the gardaí. Pepper spray had to be used on him, and his name was only obtained from his brother.
Rigney had 12 previous convictions.
“There’s a very simple answer: you need to stop drinking,” Judge Catherine Staines said. Rigney was fined €300.
