Community, sport and volunteer groups are being asked to register with Laois County Council, to make their voice heard in a new forum designed by the government to increase community involvement in council decisions.
“I strongly encourage all local groups to register, take part and elect their representatives. Our public meetings will start on September 15,” said Director of Services Anne Marie Delaney, speaking at the July council meeting.
Outgoing county manager Peter Carey was not a fan of the new system, which replaces the old Community and Voluntary Forum.
“It is a little too prescriptive for my liking but we are working with it. We already had a strong framework in existance, with the Pride of Place, the Tidy towns and the fabulous initiative Laois Connects. But it is indicative of the good work being done that Laois was chosen,” he said.
He suggested adapting the pilot scheme.
“I don’t think it’s beyond us to use our own initiative and change it ourselves,” he said.
