A Portlaoise man who allegedly broke a taxi driver’s nose in a dispute over the fare appeared at last week’s court charged with assault causing harm.

Simon Norton, Sheffield Cross, Portlaoise, is charged with the offence at Ballyroan, on April 9, 2012.

Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that Norton got a taxi from Limerick and agreed on the fare with the driver. It is alleged that Norton subsequently assaulted the driver, breaking his nose. Only one blow was allegedly struck, the inspector said.

Judge Catherine Staines accepted jurisdiction in the district court, and put the matter back to November 6 for a guilty plea to be entered, or for a hearing date to be fixed.
