Portlaoise Gardaí are urging motorists to be careful on the roads this Christmas and be patient during the periods of heavy traffic.

As shoppers wrap up the last of the Christmas shopping, expect the towns to be busier than usual and traffic to be busier.

“As usual we are warning people not to drink and drive over the Christmas period,” a spokesperson for Portlaoise Garda Station said.

Don’t leave Christmas presents in view from the outside of your home.

The Gardai are also warning people to secure their home by locking all the doors and windows, if they are going away for an extended time over the holidays.

“Switch off all the Christmas lights and set your alarm when leaving the house.”

Gardai are advising people heading away for Christmas to make their house look like there is someone at home by leaving a light

The Garda spokesperson added: “And if you are going away for a few days leave a spare key with a keyholder such as a good neighbour.”

Neighbours may be able to help you by collecting your post, opening and closing curtains and they could park their car in your driveway.
