Prison for failing to attend probation

A Mountrath man who Judge Catherine Staines said had been given every opportunity by the district court was last week given a one-month prison sentence, after he failed to engage with the probation services.

William Mulrooney, Apt 1 Library Apartments, Mountrath, was convicted back in May of theft, and a probation report was requested.

At last week’s district court Judge Staines noted there was a bad report on Mulrooney.

Defence, Mr Philip Meagher said Mulrooney had been using heroin as part of a “chaotic lifestyle”.

“If given another opportunity he will engage with probation,” said Mr Meagher.

However, Garda William Whelan pointed out there were 13 bench warrants for Mulrooney’s arrest.

Judge Staines imposed the one-month sentence, and fixed recognisance for an appeal.
