It was agreed at last week’s budget meeting of the Portlaoise Municipal District that a total of €14,000 will be used to fund community projects.
County manager Gerry Murphy told the seven councillors that previously the allocated amount for such projects was €1,000 for each councillor, but he said the councillors were free to increase this.
Cllr John Joe Fennelly said the amount should be increased.
“Each councillor should be given €2,000 on the community project, funding is a major problem and we can help out a few communities,” he said.
Cllr Mary Sweeney remarked that the grant was small but it could be very beneficial to smaller communities.
Cllr Willie Aird said he also welcomed the proposal.
Each councillor agreed that they would allocate €2,000 of their individual budget allocations to community projects, making a total of €14,000.
