A Portlaoise-based garda detective has just been appointed the regional superintendent for the entire eastern region.

Detective Inspector Martin Harrington has been promoted to the rank of superintendent with responsibility for Regional Crime Tasking and Coordination. His remit will cover six counties, Laois, Offaly, Wicklow, Kildare, Meath and Westmeath.

Speaking to the Leinster Express, the new superintendent revealed that his promotion is one of 35 newly appointed superintendents, all part of a major reshuffle of the gardaí.

“As Detective Superintendent for the region I will be overseeing all criminal investigations,” he said.

Superintendent Harrington came to Portlaoise from the Emergency Response Unit in Dublin in 2010, and was appointed detective inspector in 2013. He will be moving to the regional headquarters in Mullingar to begin his new position from next Monday, March 9.
