The dancing shoes are put away, but the fifteen couples who performed for Mountmellick United Football Club’s Strictly Come Dancing fundraiser are all winners, having raised €22,000 for their club.

The winning couple were Grainne Scott and John Edward Moloney, having raised the most money combined with judges’ votes with their dance to ‘Happy’.

Club chairman Alan Comerford has thanked everyone who helped make the event, on Valentine’s night in the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel, such a sold-out success, with audiences on their feet cheering the energetic performances.

“We would like to thank the dancers for an excellent night of entertainment, and the judges for their witty comments. Their generous scores for each couple reflected the high standard of each dance,” he said.

The substantial money raised will pay for development of a new piece of land beside Conor Davis Park, and new club kits for players.

“This is very much appreciated. We would like to thank everybody who financially contributed, those who bought tickets, sponsored our dancers, sponsored our brochure and voted on the night through our bucket collection,” Mr Comerford said, referring to the ‘bucket vote’ where the audience paid €1 to vote for their favourite couple.

Final voting was so tight that there was only a total of €100 separating the top five couples.

“Any of the fifteen couples could have been worthy champions and hearty congratulations to Grainne and John Edward who were first past the post,” said Mr Comerford, also thanking the vote counters, independent auditors Louisea Burke and Fr Michael Murphy, and compere Frank Forde.
