Issue with the social work department are “complex and many”, according to the head Gordan Jeyes, the head of the child and family agency.

Earlier this year, it emerged that more than 1,000 files which had been referred to the social work department in Laois/Offaly had not been processed.

Mr Jeyes told the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children that a shortage of social workers, nationally, is dealing about 5,000 files.

He said an additional 280 Social Workers social workers are needed for the agency to function effectively.

In April, about 700 files on children at risk in Laois and Offaly were “discovered”, along with 882 unacknowledged Garda referrals. Both lots of files were being urgently reviewed.
