gArdai are investigating a spate of burglaries across Laois within the last week, in which a two-man team of thieves broke into a number of homes and in one frightening incident were discovered by a woman standing in the hallway of her house.

Superintendent Philip Lyons said that three houses were broken into in Portlaoise last Friday evening, January 6, and one house in Vicarstown, while a house in Timahoe was targeted on Saturday afternoon, January 7.

Among the items taken were money, jewellery and a mobile phone. While most of the houses were empty at the time, a man and a woman were disturbed in their home during the Timahoe robbery. The woman was upstairs when she heard a noise downstairs and saw two men standing in the hallway of the house.

The men claimed that they were looking for directions, before they fled the scene. While no threats were made, the couple were left shaken by the incident. The house was unlocked at the time.

Supt Lyons said the suspects are not from Laois and it is believed they are connected to a criminal gang who travel around Leinster. Gardai have identified the car used and are confident of making arrests.
