The family of the dead Offaly publican Matt Farrell say they have been left heartbroken after the acquittal of Roscrea man Eddie Wing for their father’s manslaughter.

Matthew Farrell, son of the publican Matt Farrell, said: “Family and friends are all disappointed. We thought a guilty verdict would come and it didn’t so we’re all heartbroken. What can we do only move on from here now?”

Describing his late father, he said: “He was well liked around Daingean. He was well loved. He was great. Everyone respected him. He ran the pub and he used to get on very well with everyone and we all loved him family as well.”

Asked about the impact of his death on his family he said: “We went through a lot the last three years so it’s been very hard the last three years, just dealing with it. It’s not a natural death so to deal with that was very hard. It’s been a long time.”

Asked whether gardai would continue with the investigation into his father’s death, he said: “I don’t know if they can or not. They probably have to wait for if something else comes to light.”
