A SENIOR Garda has expressed concerns about a major criminal gang living in Portarlington following a violent row in the pub recently.

Local councillors have also said the public is worried saying that people in the town are living in fear. One politican went as far as claiming that the town could even see events similar to the London riots, if the situation gets out of hand.

This week, a national newspaper reported that a serious criminal gangster was residing in the town. The Evening Herald report stated that he had been involved in a pub knife attack that left a barman and four customers with stab wounds.

Local gardai originally described the incident as a fracas, but they denied this week that anybody had been been stabbed. However, Garda Inspector Martin Harrington was concerned about the involvement of a man arrested at the scene in Gogarty’s pub on August 6.

“There was a dispute in the pub over someone not being served. A man was searched on the premises and a knife was found. He was arrested and will appear before the courts,” he said

Insp Harrington said they had been aware that a well known gang member was living in the area. “Our main concern would be that when you have a gang member living in the area it attracts other activity to the area,” he said.

Laois County Councillor, Paul Mitchell said people were concerned about walking down the streets at night.
