DEMOLITION of five former Scoil Chríost Rí stand alone buildings in Portlaoise began on June 11 last, with work on the site ongoing.

In opposing the planning application of the Presentation Provincialate (lodged on April 29,2011 and granted on September 9 with seven conditions attached) to demolish the Scoil Chríost Rí three storey classroom block, the two storey home economics/arts building, the single storey canteen, classoom prefab and shed, Cllr Willie Aird said there was a serious ‘risk this site will become a centre for anti social behaviour’.

Cllr Kathleen O’Brien, in her submission, commented, “It is regrettable that these buildings are to be knocked and no use for them.”

She aaded, “The Presentation Convent looks derelict and neglected and I would not like to see the same happen to the grounds of the Presentation College.”

Included among the conditions attached to the granting of permission to demolish the former school buildings was that the developer shall facilitate the preservation, recording and protection of archaeological materials or features that may exist within the site and employ a suitably-qualified archaeologist.

And the reason for this was to conserve the archaeological history of the site and to secure the preservation and protection of any remains that may exist within the site.

Scoil Chríost Rí moved into a new multi-purpose campus during 2010.
