THE issue of illegal dumping of household and industrial waste at Lower Forest, Mountmellick has been highlighted this week.
According to a local representative the increased incidents of dumping poses a serious pollution risk to the nearby River Barrow and also represents a potential fire hazard to Coillte and private forestry in the area.
Sinn Féin’s Cllr Stephen Lynch said he ‘views with alarm’ the widespread dumping problem at Lower Forest.
The area is very popular with local people boasting tranquil walkways and a nature reserve, while generations of families have harvested their winter fuel on the forest bog.
