No cash - crossing on busy road

A PEDESTRIAN crossing is needed in the vicinity of Cherrygarth and Kylebrook on the Abbeyleix Road in Portlaoise according to town mayor, Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald.

Cllr Fitzgerald proposed the motion at last week’s town council meeting in County Hall.

“That’s a very, very wide road and it’s very dangerous, it’s nearly impossible to cross that road. I see people struggling to cross it every day,” she said.

“We’re justified having one there in the interest of safety,” said Cllr Tom Jacob.

Cllr Kathleen O’Brien also described it as a very busy road and said that a pedestrian crossing should have been installed there in the first place.

A response from Laois County Council said that there is no funding available to carry out the works.

“I’m very disappointed in that reply,” said Cllr Fitzgerald.
