Live register jumps in Laois

THE number of people on the Live Register in Laois continues to rise, with 190 additional people now signing on than was reported for this same period last year.

THE number of people on the Live Register in Laois continues to rise, with 190 additional people now signing on than was reported for this same period last year.

The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office reveal that by the end of January, there were 8826 people signing on in Laois. This figure comprised 3377 in Portarlington, 4311 in Portlaoise and 1138 in Rathdowney. This is 2.2% higher than January 2012, when there were 8,636 on the register. The 2012 figure showed the same number signing on in Port (3377), while Portlaoise had 4,105 and Rathdowney reported 1,154.

The figure for January also indicated a slight increase on the number signing on at the end of 2012. By December of last year, there were 8,809 people signing on across the county. This was broken down to 3,345 in Portarlington, 4,310 in Portlaoise and 1,154 in Rathdowney.

This figure for December 2012 is 234 higher than the same month in 2011, when 8,575 people were signing on in Laois (3,399 in Portarlington, 4,037 in Portlaoise and 1,139 in Rathdowney). This means that the total number in Laois rose by 2.7% for 2012, a figure which is still increasing.
