A family party led to public order charges for a Portlaoise father of three .

Thomas Delaney, 4 Hebpurn Court, Ballyfin Road, Portlaoise appeared at Portlaoise District Court last week charged with threatening and abusive behaviour and failing to comply.

Gardai were called to Delaney on April 13, this year at Abbeycourt, Abbeyleix Road, Portlaosie.

“He was roaring and shouting and there was other people present.,” Inspector Aidan Farrelly said. Delaney had six previous convictions.

Defending, Josephine Fitzpatrick, said Delaney, who had three young children had been attending a family function and was drinking during the day.

“He is anxious to take up whatever offer the court has to make, rather than prison,” Ms Fitzpatrick said.

Judge Staines said prison would not achieve anything. “You’re three young children are witnessing their father abuse alcohol. Prison wouldn’t achieve anything.

“They have to put up with him coming home drunk and the hangover the next day,” Judge Staines said. She told the defendant that she wanted an excellent report from the Athy Alternative Project or she would impose a three month sentence.

The case was adjourned until September 12 so he could participate in the course.
