The loss of Portloise’s GAA star Peter McNulty to suicide has led the town’s club to back a new project to promote menatl health in sport.

Peter O’Neill, Portlaoise GAA and Laois County Board vice-chairman said the club is delighted to be involved in the Sports Your Mind Programme to be launched tonight (Tuesday) in Rathleague.

“As a club we are only too well aware of the devastation that comes with losing a loved one. We lost a much loved and talented player in Peter McNulty in October 2010. Having this experience, we wholeheartedly desire to do everything to prevent the loss of another young life.

“We will continue to work with the HSE and the many voluntary organisations towards fostering positive mental health and resilience in our young people but also among the wider community,” he said.

The HSE programme is launched as part of Laois Connects mental health week. See pages 52, 53, 72
