Portlaoise gardaí are appealing for information following an assault on a taxi driver in the town in the early hours of the morning.
Last Monday, December 2, at around 2.30am, a local taxi driver gave two men a lift from Portlaoise to Ballycarroll. When they arrived at Ballycarroll the two men attempted to walk away without paying the fare. When the taxi driver challenged them they attacked him, leaving him with cuts to his face and bruising to his shoulder and legs.
No weapon was used in the assault. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to contact the Portlaoise Garda Station on 05786 74100.
The gardaí have also confirmed that there were two separate incidents of tools and diesel being taken from premises around the county.
Some time between 5pm on Wednesday, December 4 and 9.30am on Thursday, December 5, a farmyard shed was broken into at Ratheniska and a number of tools taken, such as drills and socket sets. A quantity of fuel was also stolen.
Meanwhile, between 9pm on Sunday, December 8 and 8.30am on Monday, December 9, a number of sheds at the back of Portarlington Golf Club were broken into. Drills, spanners and socket sets were stolen, and a fuel tank was interfered with, although it is not known if any diesel was taken.
A garda spokesman has given a warning to the public, to be aware of people offering tools for sale at reduced prices. If anyone has any information on the robberies, they can contact the garda station.
