Residents in Ratheniska are “devastated” at the news that An Bord Pleanala has granted approval for the Laois-Kilkenny Reinforcement Project.
The news was announced last Friday, April 25 and spokesperson Colm Fingleton from the Ratheniska Timahoe Spink (RTS) Substation Action Group said that people in the area still can’t believe it.
“Basically people are absolutely devastated.
“Everything we brought to the oral hearing in Portlaoise was just thrown out.
“It feels like we never existed. None of the issues around the consultation, the EU laws among others, were acknowledged”.
“It is just disgraceful. It sets a marker for any other group around the country. How can they expect a fair hearing? Badgers have more rights in An Bord Pleanala than people do.”
“We have no appeals body because they are the appeals body. The only avenues open to us are the courts. We are meeting to discuss where we are going, but one thing for sure is that we are not rolling over”.
EirGrid said that they “will be working with ESB Networks to further develop this important project with construction due to commence in late 2015 or early 2016”.
