a PROTEST demonstration has been organised in Portlaoise against the proposed downgrading of Midlands Regional A&E this Sunday, July 3. The protest will assemble at County Hall at 3pm and then proceed to the hospital.

The demonstration was organised at a public meeting last night (Wednesday, July 29) which was attended by over 500 people. Portlaoise GAA Centre was bursting at the seams as the public turned out to voice their objections against the downgrade of Portlaoise A&E to a minor injuries unit. Local representatives who spoke at the meeting said they are seeking a meeting with the Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly, as soon as possible,

Speaking from the floor, Maura Hyland from Emo said the Minister should be made drive from Portlaoise to Tullamore, with a sick person. “You would only get as far as Killeigh, and after that he has a dead body on his hands,” she said to a rousing round of applause.

An action committee was also formed at the meeting with local councillors and members of the public.
