THERE has been a jobs boost in retailing with confirmation that one of the highest profile high street chains is setting up in Portlaoise.
Boots has confirmed that it is to open in the Laois Shopping Centre Portlaoise this month. The chemist will officialy open its doors on September 21 and will employ a total of 24 people from the area.
There will be 12 full time and 12 part time jobs in the store which include pharmacists and shop assisitants. Almost all of the positions have already been filled and Boots hope to complete their recruitment process in the coming weeks. The Laois store will be the 64th Boots store in Ireland.
Managed by Laois Burns, the store will offer all the usual cosmetics and toiletries for men and women. Debbie Smith, managing director, Boots Ireland. said the company were delighted to be opening a store in Laois.
“We’re delighted to be opening here and to be part of the exciting new Laois Shopping Centre, something which the town and people of Portlaoise have been eagerly anticipating for some time. We believe Boots will complement the existing retail offering in this thriving community and we are looking forward to offering our customers an extensive product range and excellent standards of customer care.”

“We are delighted to welcome Boots to Laois Shopping Centre. A key element of the redevelopment of the centre is to create an improved offer for our customers and enhance their overall shopping experience. The introduction of Boots will certainly do just that,” he sid.
British variety store chain Poundland, trading as Dealz is also currently fitting out a new store in the shopping centre and should be opening later this month.
But a spokesperson for Harcourt Development said there was a number of other retailers in “advanced negotiations.” She would not confirm if Cardphone Wharehouse is to open in the centre but it has advertised for positions at a new store in Portlaoise.
Meanwhile, Argos has also confirmed that it is recruiting staff for Christmas at its shops in Portlaoise and Tullamore.
