A PORTARLINGTON man who stole a bag of groceries was given community service at Portlaoise District Court last week.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that Michael Flynn, 1 Huguenot House, Frenchchurch Street, Port, entered Centra, Main Street, Port, on November 19 last year. Flynn filled a bag of groceries and left without paying.

The total cost of goods was €32 and all items were recovered.

Flynn had 28 previous convictions.

Defence, Mr Philip Meagher said Flynn was ashamed of his actions.

“He was between addresses and his social welfare was stopped, so he was living hand to mouth,” Mr Meagher said.

Flynn was given 150 hours’ community service in lieu of three months in prison. The matter was put back to July 12.
