A PORTLAOISE man drank alcohol for two days solid, before stealing a bottle of wine from a local shop.

Connor Murray, 16 Parnell Crescent, was charged with theft from Shoprite, Borris Road, Portlaoise, on May 20.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that Murray had left the store without paying for the bottle of wine, which was valued at €12.

Murray, who is 19 years old, has no previous convictions.

Defence, Mr Declan Breen said his client had been drinking for two days solid. It was a Sunday morning and Murray needed more drink.

“His recollection is very vague,” Mr Breen said, handing in €13 to the court on behalf of his client.

“He needs to address his drink problem,” Mr Breen admitted.

The matter was put back to July 19 for a probation report.
