Some landlords to falsifing documents so their tenants can claim rent allowance, according to Councillor Caroline Dwane-Stanley.

“The majority of landlords are refusing rent allowance tenants because the rent ceiling is so low,” she said.

A single person would receive €340 rent allowance, while a one parent family with two children gets just €480.

“There is no property for that much, they are all up around €650. Some people have had to get landlords to falsify documents and put down a lower rent, otherwise they would not be entitled to rent allowance,” she told last week’s meeting of Laois County Council.

“People are being temporarily housed in B&B’s, hotels and hostels. I know of one woman living with her six kids in a caravan and another man living in his car.

“There are two solutions increase the rent allowance ceiling and bring in rent controls like other parts of Europe,” She said.

Supporting the motion, Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald said: “This is going to be the single biggest issue of this year, it’s the new homeless and we need to deal with it.
