A PORTLAOISE man has been fined for abusing the gardaí.
Christopher O’Brien, 39 Dr Murphy Place, was charged with threatening or abusive behaviour, at Dr Murphy Place on December 3 last year.
Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that gardaí stopped O’Brien and informed him they were going to search him. O’Brien refused and became verbally and physically abusive.
He has 35 previous convictions.
Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick admitted that her client has come to the attention of the gardaí on a continual basis. On the day, O’Brien was going to get coal for fuel when the gardaí stopped him. He gave his name when requested, but when the officers asked his address he asked them had he done anything wrong and then became unhelpful.
Ms Fitzpatrick said O’Brien had written a letter of apology to the gardaí, but he had left it at home on the day of court.
O’Brien was fined €300.
