Bottle tax will reduce illegal dumping

Councillor Martin Phelan wants the government to introduce a 25cent deposit on bottles. He claims this would reduce the volume of cans and bottles being dumped from cars and trucks on the roadside.

Councillor Martin Phelan wants the government to introduce a 25cent deposit on bottles. He claims this would reduce the volume of cans and bottles being dumped from cars and trucks on the roadside.

He said shops should be responsible for the these bottles.

Cllr John King described it as a good motion, as litter was tidy towns groups biggest challenge.

“We collected 12 bags of bottles and cans in Rathdowney,” he explained.

While, Cllr John Bonham said the plastic bag levy should be extended to cover sandwich wrappers and coffee cups.
