Robbery spree in Portlaoise

PORTLAOISE experienced a spate of robberies from businesses in the past fortnight, with gardaí pursuing an active line of inquiry into a series of incidents that they believe are connected.

PORTLAOISE experienced a spate of robberies from businesses in the past fortnight, with gardaí pursuing an active line of inquiry into a series of incidents that they believe are connected.

In the early hours of Monday December 12, two premises at Lyster Square were broken into. A butcher’s shop had its front window smashed at around 5am and the thieves stole a small quantity of cash, while a health shop located next door also had its front window smashed and a number of items were taken.

This week, on Monday December 19, a shoe shop in Lyster Square was targeted. The assailants struck some time between 4am and 8am, with the front glass door smashed with a rock before the contents of the till were stolen. In a separate incident in the early hours of Tuesday, December 20, thieves struck at the Topaz petrol station in Portlaoise. After forcing entry, the assailants made off with a laptop.

Gardaí have confirmed that they are following a definite line of investigation, but they are asking for anyone with any information on any of the crimes to contact the Portlaoise Garda Station on 05786 74100.
