Student Jack Keating took home the first rowing win for St Mary’s College Knockbeg when he competed in the Irish Schools Regatta in O’Brien’s Bridge, Limerick last April 27.
Keating rowed in the men’s junior under 14 and junior under 15 single scull.
He won the junior U14 race, beating a school from Killorglin, Kerry and Carlow’s Christian Brothers.
Later in the day the student rowed in the heats of the junior under 15 single sculls, coming second by just 7.5cm to Presentation College Carlow,Unfortunately this meant Jack did not make it to the final. Two more Knockbeg students also took part in the regatta on the day.
John Brophy rowed in the men’s junior U16 single scull but unfortunately he was beaten. He then rowed in the junior 16 double scull, pairing up with fellow Knockbeg student Adrian Sweeney, but unfortunately for both they were again beaten.
The rowers are coached by Brendan Byrne, who was delighted with the win by Jack Keating. There are now high hopes for more wins in the future in rowing for St Mary’s college Knockbeg.
