THE solicitor for a Monasterevin woman charged with three counts of theft admitted to the District Court that she was unable to offer any explanation for the woman’s actions.

Solicitor, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said she was at a loss to explain why Patricia Hannon, of 17 Togher Road, Monasterevin, had commiited three thefts from stores in Portlaoise on June 28. The court heard that Hannon was stopped by security staff at Dunnes Stores, Kyle Shopping Centre, after she attempted to steal a presentation box of Morgan’s Rum valued at €22.49. A futher search of her person by gardaí revealed items worth €35 which had been taken from Penneys, Laois Shopping Centre, and alcohol priced at €22 from Tesco, Portlaoise.

She has no previous convictions.

Ms Fitzpatrick said her client had issues around depression, but this was not an excuse for her actions. Ms Fitzpatrick pointed out that all the items were recovered by gardaí.

The matter was put back to September 20 for a probation report.
