A MAN who smashed a car window to steal a jacket and purse and also stole petrol from a garage on two separate occasions has been given a suspended sentence and ordered to pay full compensation.
John McDonagh, formerly living in Portlaoise but now with an address listed at Apt 21, St Catherine Gate, Parnell Road, Crumlin, smashed the window of a car parked at Emo Wood on October 2 last year and stole a black jacket and purse valued at €100. €150 of damage was caused to the car and the stolen items were not recovered.
McDonagh also drove off without paying for petrol from Fitzpatricks garage of Monasterevin, taking petrol to the value of €8.83 on May 4 and €20.01 on July 11 last year. He also failed to appear in court on two dates in November.
Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client had fallen into a heroin habit following a death in the family and had been stealing to feed his addiction.
Judge Early ordered the full payment of compensation of €328.84 and remanded McDonagh on bail to October 11, for a probation report and urine analysis. If the money is paid, the judge said he would impose a four-month sentence suspended for 12 months.
