Every student, teacher and staff member of Mountrath Community School turned out to give a warm welcome back to 5th year student Michael Nevin, fresh from winning two gold medals in junior boxing at the European finals in Anapa, Russia recently.
The 6 times National Champion got a warm heartfelt cheers from his fellow students as he made his way to the stage, where the principal Martin Gleeson congratulated him on such a significant and confident winning performance.
Michael had decisive wins in all five of his fights at the European finals.
“It was tough fighting the Russians on home ground. But it was so unbelievable to bring the gold medal back to Ireland, Portlaoise and especially my school, Mountrath Community School,” Michael told the school.
Principal Martin Gleeson believes Michael can make it to the Olympic Games.
“The entire school are extremely proud of their European Champion. I urge the students to remember such outstanding legacy from one of Ireland’s greatest boxers now and in the future,” said the principal.
He also said that Michael was a great athlete and dedicated hardworking student.
He then presented Michael with a large cake, topped with iced boxing gloves.
Michaels family are delighted with his success.
“All the family are so thrilled and proud of his achievement,” said his brother Hughie.
“He has trained so hard, that he really deserved his gold medal,” said Michael’s sister Helen.
“The students and staff were rooting for Michael as he gave it his best in Russia,” said Mrs McCarthy, deputy principal.
