Laois Laochra Special Olympics Club meets every Monday in St Mary’s Hall from 7 to 8 pm. Training for all ages involves a warm up, games and a match - generally football or shinty. There is also the opportunity to attend different sporting events, participate in the Athlete Leadership Programme and enjoy a Summer Outing, Christmas Party and Roll and Bowl Trips. New members are always welcome.

The heath quiz

The Annual Table Quiz in aid of Scoil an Fhraoich Mhoir, The Heath will be held on Friday February 27 at 9pm in Treacy’s Pub and Restaurant. €40 per table of 4. Tickets are available from the Parents Council by contacting Louise on 087-9177472 or pay at door on the night. All are welcome for a fun filled night, with raffle and finger food.

DAredevils Foróige

On January 30 the Dare Devils Foróige donated €320 to AADI dogs. The club raised this money by doing a sponsored walk which some members and dogs of AADI attended. It was a great meeting the dogs and we hope the money wil help in some way.


This year’s Portlaoise Parish Annual Novena will follow a more intense experience over nine days beginning on Saturday, February 28 concluding on Sunday March 8. The Novena will be celebrated at following Masses every day. Guest Celebrants and Speakers will lead each day of Novena.

Knitting Group, meet Wednesdays from 11-1pm to knit and have a cuppa and a chat. Ciorcal Cómhrá, meet Wednesdays from 5.15-6.30, informal chat ‘as Gaeilge’, all levels welcome. Children Bookclub The bookclub (11-12 yrs) will meet this Friday to discuss ‘Ballet Shoes’ and ‘Beyond the Cherry Tree’. All welcome.

The Heath annual walk

The annual walk in aid of the Health Hall and Cemetery takes place on Sunday, February 22 at 3pm. All money raised go to the upkeep of the cemetery and for future development. Refreshments will be served in the hall afterwards.

St Patrick’s Day

Volunteers and committee members urgently needed for the 2015 St Patrick’s Day parade. Committee meetings will be every Wednesday at 6:15pm in DeBruns pub - subject to change depending on availability of committee members. Hoping to have the parade same time as last year at 12:30pm right after the Streets of Portlaoise 5K. New committee as follows: Chairperson - Monica Delaney, Secretary - Dom Dunne, Treasurer - Theresa Whelan, PRO - Ger Whelan.

Portlaoise GAA

Portlaoise GAA presentation night takes place in O’Loughln’s Hotel on Friday, February 20. Function commences at 9pm. Finger food and refreshments served. All players, family and club members are welcome.

The AGM which took place on January 30, saw the election of John Hanniffy as club chairman. He replaces Vinny Dowling who stepped down after many years of dedicated service to the Town as chairman during some of the clubs most successful years on the field.

Cycling & Touring

Laois Cycling & Touring Club is looking for new members. The club meets each Sunday in the car park of the Maldron Hotel in Portlaoise at 8:45 am. There are routes to suit all levels of cyclists. Beginners will be accompanied by one or more of our experienced club members. All cyclists should have a road worthy bike and a helmet We also encourage cyclists to have a drink them. Late Bobby BROWN

Condolences to the family of the late Bobby Brown, New Rd and late of Dublin Rd, Portlaoise who died on February 5 suddenly. Son of the late James and Elizabeth Brown (Brown’s Shop). Deeply regretted by his loving partner Pauline, sister Claire (Canada), extended family, relatives and friends. Removal to SS Peter & Paul’s Church for Requiem Mass. Interment afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.

Late Michael Gerard CRYAN

Condolencts to the family of the late Michael Cryan Belturbet Road, Butlersbridge, formerly of the Leinster Express who died on Monday February 9 following a long illness. Beloved husband of Jacinta (nee Foynes) devoted and loving father. Sadly missed by brothers sisters, extended family, relatives and friends.
