Portlaoise Councillor, Noel Tuohy has called on the Minister for Justice to review the sentencing policy in relation to assaults on prison officers and the gardai.

Cllr Tuohy saidn over 150 officers assaulted each year for the last two years.

This year, three prison officers were savagely attacked in the Midlands Prison, just weeks after two prison officers received serious injuries in Tallaght Hospital, when a prisoner escaped.

“It’s no deterrent to the prisoner if sentences run concurrently, they won’t serve a longer sentence” Cllr Tuohy said.

Cllr James Kelly agreed: “There should be increased sentences. The officer needs to be supported too.”
