A prisoner at the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise who was caught with a mobile phone was given a one-month sentence for the offence at last week’s district court.

Before the court was Michael Quilligan, who was found with the phone on July 29 this year.

Quilligan has 92 previous convictions, the majority of which are road traffic.

Solicitor, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick explained that 25-year-old Quilligan is currently serving a one-year sentence for road traffic matters and is due to be released on February 17 next year.

She asked the prosecuting garda, Detective Edel Hanley to confirm that the phone did not have a SIM card in it. Detective Hanley said this was correct, and Quilligan had outlined reasons for having the phone.

Judge Staines imposed a one-month sentence.
