Luke Jacob, with an address at Apartment 4, the Oaks, Kilnacourt, Portarlington, Co Laois, but originally from Rathangan, was brought before a special sitting of Portlaoise District Court under armed garda escort on Sunday, September 15.

Garda Detective Gerry Galwey of Portarlington Garda Station told Judge John Coughlan that the accused was detained at 5pm on Friday, September 13 at the Oaks apartment. He said Jacob was charged on Saturday evening, September 14 with two firearms offences. The accused did not reply when charged.

Det Galwey asked that Jacob be remanded in custody to appear in Portlaoise District Court on Thursday, September 19.

Judge Coughlan granted this request noting that there was no application for bail. He also granted legal aid after Det Galwey confirmed that further “serious charges” may be brought.

Defence solicitor Declan Breen said his client suffers from asthma and Hepatitis C and requested that Jacob be allowed to attend an appointment in St James Hospital in Dublin which was also granted.

Jacob was originally detained after two sawn off shotguns, a pistol, ammunition and an estimated €10,000 worth of cannabis herb were seized at The Oaks on Friday, September 13.
