‘Lunacy’ of paying for prefabs

PLANS for the new school in Knockmay need to be fast-tracked, according to Cllr Caroline Dwane, as students are being taught in third-hand portacabins.

PLANS for the new school in Knockmay need to be fast-tracked, according to Cllr Caroline Dwane, as students are being taught in third-hand portacabins.

At the town council meeting, Cllr Dwane said that third-hand prefabs are being rented at €148,000 per year.

Cllr Alan Hand said this was lunacy, as it would be cheaper to build classrooms.

“In winter they’re impossible to heat, they’re not suitable as classrooms,” he said.

“Some teachers there have never worked in a proper school, just prefabs,” said Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald.
