Laois slips into gear for Bike Week

Bike Week 2014 runs this year from June 14 to June 22, with a number of events taking place locally.

Today (Tuesday, June 17), there will be a fun cycle for children 3-4 years attending Jelly Tots Creche, at 10am at Fr Breen Park Abbeyleix.

There will be cycle at 7pm with Ossory Cycling Club, starting from The Square, Rathdowney.

There will be a cycling safety workshop from 10am to 1pm, today and tomorrow (Wednesday), for the third class pupils of Portarlington Primary School.

The Complex Cycling Club will host a 10k and 20k Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Kiln Lane Residents Association, Mountrath, will have a cycle from 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday.

Camross National School will have a school cycle starting at 11.15am from the school to Coolrain Playground via Derrylahan and return.

On Thursday, Laois Sports Partnership will host tandem cycling at Portlaoise Leisure Centre.

On Sunday, June 22, Ossory Cycling Club will have The Ballagh Challenge. And also on Sunday there will be the Abbeyleix Juvenile Soccer sponsored cycle to Durrow and back.

Bike Week is an annual opportunity to promote cycling, and show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life by encouraging everyday cycling for everyone. Demonstrating the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling, the week aims to get people to give cycling a go all over Ireland.

As the biggest nationwide cycling event in the Ireland, Bike Week encourages over thousands of people to join in events, rethink their everyday journeys and switch to cycling as the most convenient way to get around.
