This Easter, RTE will broadcast the Good Friday and Holy Saturday night liturgies live on television and radio from Holy Trinity Church Rathdowney.
It is the second big undertaking recently for the parish choir, last Christmas staging a concert with Liam Lawton, Daniel and Majella O’Donnell.
It combines Rathdowney and Errill church choirs, and rehearsing with them are pupils of Errill NS, uileann piper Billy Carrigan and drumming teacher Eddie O’Neill.
Many are busily preparing says PP Fr Martin Delaney.
“The sacristan, caretakers, readers and altar servers are working to ensure everything will be as perfect as we can make it. The Scout Troop will organise the Paschal Fire and florist Caroline Harahill has designed a floral display while craftsman Oliver Kennedy has created a special cross to be used as part of the liturgy on Good Friday,” he said.
The cross is made of five beams of wood, which throughout Lent have travelled to each home where families wrote their burdens down. RTE will also broadcast interviews with local parishioners.
On Holy Saturday a highlight will be the baptism of twin girls Annie and Rosie Delaney, daughters of Edel and Laois senior hurler Alan from Harristown.
The Good Friday (April 3) broadcast begins at 2.55pm on RTE One television, RTE Radio and the RTE Player. The Easter Vigil (April 4) goes live at 11pm.
