Septic tank threat to Offaly water supply

Septic tanks are overflowing at a row of houses in Brittas, Clonaslee, endangering the water source for Tullamore town, according to Cllr Seamus McDonald. At the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District, he asked that the council seek funding to extend the new sewer network. “The source of Tullamore’s water is on the road, and there are 15 houses with septic tanks overflowing on the other side,” he said.

In reply engineer Farhan Naseim said it was “unlikely that Irish Water would approve an extension of this contract given that it is now almost completed. He said proof of “an existing public health risk from existing septic tanks” would be needed.
