Close to 17.5 tonnes of rubbish lifted

Almost 17.5 tonnes of rubbish was collected during the annual ‘Clean Up Laois Week’, according to acting CEO Gerry Murphy.

Almost 17.5 tonnes of rubbish was collected during the annual ‘Clean Up Laois Week’, according to acting CEO Gerry Murphy.

“Litter pickers, gloves and bags were distributed to 95 registered groups,” he said in his monthly management report.

“This just shows how dirty a nation we are but every nook and corner was cleaned that week,” Cllr Willie Aird said.

Cllr Padraig Fleming said it was “phenomenal” the amount of litter that was picked up during clean up Laois week.

Cllr Paddy Bracken also had praise for the volunteers who helped clean up their towns and villages. He said it should be done twice a year.

The council provided litter pickers, gloves and bags to 95 registered groups around the county.
