Cllr Willie Aird said it was Minister Joan Burton’s decision to remove county councillors from the board.

“I would liken this to when Michael Martin was Minister for Health and he did away with the Health Board,” he said.

“Before public reps could go in and look for a grant for a person, but that’s all done away with now. 99% of those people went on to be very successful. It’s another layer of democracy taken away and a further disenfranchising. I request that public reps be put back on the committee.”

Director of services, Anna Marie Delaney confirmed that councillors were no longer on the board of management, but said that they now reported directly to the county manager.
