The rain held off just long enough for the Portlaoise St Patrick’s Day parade to complete its circuit of the town, with a vibrant display of the wearing of the green.
The crowds turned out in force to watch St Joseph’s Accordion Band in full regalia, fine displays by the Triogue Brownies and Portlaoise Scouts, and Irish dancers from various schools. There were butchers with bikes and men dressed as cattle, rodeo riders on horseback, floral displays, and floats from numerous local businesses.
The Portlaoise Pantomime Group turned out in costume, Portlaoise Basketball Club twice stage a synchronised dance routine, while The Heath GAA club rolled a giant football the size of a boulder along the route.
Also appearing were Raheen Vintage Club, Scoil Rince Ni Dhuinn, Portlaoise Credit Union, the Foroige club, Ballyfin AC, Happy Hearts Club, Park/Ratheniska GAA, Portlaoise Tidy Towns, the Gaelscoil, Laois Special Olympics, Cara Rescue Dogs, Pet World, Friends of Irish Guide Dogs, Clonad GAA, Portlaoise Leisure Centre, and Portlaoise Men’s Shed, among others.
