At this month’s meeting of Portlaoise Town Council, Cllr Caroline Dwane called for extra car parking spaces in St Brigid’s Place at the front of the houses and adjacent to 36 St Brigid’s Place. She also asked the council to mark the car parking spaces opposite 1 St Brigid’s Place.

In reply council engineer, Tom O’Carroll said that markings could be considered but there was limited space at No 36 and there was no funding provided in this year’s budget for this work.

Cllr Dwane said she had received 17 signatures from residents requesting extra car parking spaces.

“Because the road is so narrow, people are double parking in the area. Residents’ cars are being damaged.”

Cllr Dwane said there was a parking bay opposite no 1, and she asked the council to make this as a temporary measure.

“People started parking their cars around the back, but they were tampered with. It’s a narrow road and there are cars on both sides,” she said.

She asked the council to keep the item on the agenda for when funding does become available.

Supporting the motion, Cllr Alan Hand said the area had become very congested.

“These houses were built when there was fewer cars,” he said.
