THE removal of poles comes with a ‘big price tag’ advised Senior Executive Engineer Orla Barrett at the Emo electoral area meeting in Emo Court.

Responding to a motion from Cathaoirleach Paul Mitchell asking that poles which are in the middle of the footpath at Bracklone Street, Portarlington be removed to make it safe for pedestrians, Ms Barrett said it will cost and she hoped to have the price by December.

“Enquiries have been made with Eircom with regard to having these poles removed. It is understood from Eircom that the removal of the poles would require significant works on their part. We are currently awaiting full esimates together with the extent of the required works,” revealed Ms Barrett.

Cllr Mitchell said he didn’t agree with the fact there should be a cost to Laois County Council. “You wouldn’t see poles like them anywhere. It is completely ridiculous.”

Cllr Ray Cribbin agreed and suggested that ‘all poles’ around Portarlington ‘be removed’.
