A PORTARLINGTON man has been fined €100 for the unlawful possession of drugs.

A PORTARLINGTON man has been fined €100 for the unlawful possession of drugs.

James Lawrence, of 7 Barrow Way, Spa Road, Portarlington, was a passenger in a car which was stopped by gardaí at Ballinclea, Stradbally, on June 22.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that gardaí received a call that the car was being driven in a suspicious manner. When the car was stopped, Lawrence was found to be in a highly intoxicated state and had cannabis valued at €25 on his person.

Defence, Mr Philip Meagher said his client had met an individual on the day and a suggestion was made to buy alcohol.

The drink was consumed and they decided to take a trip around the country and it was during this trip that the drugs were obtained.

Mr Meagher said that his client had cooperated fully with the gardaí, although the driver of the car had fled the scene.

Mr Meagher explained that Lawrence had been using cannabis irregularly, but he now no longer uses it.

Judge Catherine Staines convicted and fined Lawrence €100.
